There is no standard LDAP API.  The most widely used LDAP implementation
is from us (the University of Michigan), and it does include a documented
client-side API.  The UofM LDAP distribution is available here:

    ftp://terminator.rs.itd.umich.edu/ldap/ldap.tar.Z
