Yes, you're absolutely right. The only way I can get a diff is when a
file is saved. For the situation of a file is being edited, I'm planning
on writing things to find out which lines are changed on the fly based
on a diff from when a file was saved in the past, so that the markers
can be updated as a file is being edited.
I still don't know what to do about commit detection though. If there is
a way to get a notification when a file is modified, I could probably
just keep an eye on the right file in CVS/.svn/.git, e.g. the one that
contains the HEAD revision number. If that changes, bingo!
