Based on the earlier threads on kde-core-devel and kde-usability:

  http://lists.kde.org/?t=121193367700002&r=2&w=2
  http://lists.kde.org/?t=121193367700002&r=2&w=2

I'd like to remind of the "problem" (if percieved as such), and the proposed
solutions.

These dialogs are too wide for those who like to have editor windows in
smaller widths (e.g. 80 chars). In Kate they will expand the window itself
(leading to a expand/shrink behavior when dialog is invoked/closed), while
in KWrite elements of the dialog will be eaten away. This behavior is more
pronounced in languages with lenghtier words. Some screenshots with a 79-
column text (where from Kate, the dialog is at its minimum width):

After taking advice from the above threads into account, sans motions to
remove features or modify behavior, I come up with this final proposal for
the power search:

As for the incremental search, I've moved info-line below the input field,
so that there is no width problem, and user gets feedback right where his
eys are when typing:

  http://caslav.gmxhome.de/image/kde4-searchbarincremental-02-winfo.png

The trade-off for recovered width in both cases is increased height (albeit
in incremental bar, the height anyway increased when the right-hand side
info wrapped around).
