In this case I mean kate's build in command line, which is part of the window, 
press F7 to activate it (in case you were in doubt). The goal of the command 
line is to provide a (very) fast way to actiavte various commands (with 
argumnents), and to interfer with scripts for example, and in the current 
state (kde 3.5) it still has very simplified functionality. I still prefer it 
for find, replace and incremental search, in fact *because* it has no GUI 
buttons, I have to type the command I want, and I find that often faster than 
interpreting [the state of] and clicking GUI buttons.

At this point I have come to appreciate that it would probably be better to 
have a dedicated bar for incremental search, with only the relevant buttons 
on it. FWIW
