I was told that newline substitution isn't possible because Kate is a 
line editor.

I would like to remove empty lines, ie, s/\n\n/\n/, and to have 
subsitutions operate across line boundaries. Can I achieve that with 
Kate by any means or do I have to go back to Vim and RFTM for that sort 
of thing?
