With the Text Filter Plugin enabled (obviously), selecting utf-8 
encoded text and sending it through a filter breaks multibyte characters.

To reproduce: 
1. select any text including multibyte characters, such as german umlauts, for example:
   "Käte"
2. Ctrl-backslash to open text filter dialog, filter through cat
3. the multibyte characters in the replacement text will be mangled

changing the locale manually (from the view menu) doesn't help.
kate saves the files correctly in utf-8.
