Summary: home key should move to the real beginning of line when
it is not there
Product: kate
Version: unspecified
Platform: unspecified
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: wishlist
Priority: NOR
Component: kwrite
AssignedTo: kwrite-devel kde org
ReportedBy: noamraph gmail com
Version: 4.3 (using KDE 3.3.2, (3.1))
Compiler: gcc version 3.3.5 (Debian 1:3.3.5-6)
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.6.7-1-386
Hello,
The current behaviour in kwrite, in the "embedded advanced text editor", is that \
pressing the home key moves the cursor to the beginning of the text on the line, \
after the indentation tabs. Only if the cursor is already in that place, pressing \
home will move to the real beginning of the line.
I would like this behaviour to change: I think it would be better if pressing home \
anywhere on the line will move the cursor to the real beginning of the line, and only \
if the cursor is already in the beginning of the line, it will move to the beginning \
of the interesting text.
The reason is user-interface-level compatibility with simpler text editors, where the \
home key always moves the cursor to the real beginning of the line. I encountered \
this now, when I opened a HTML file in kwrite, and wanted to delete the indentation \
tabs in front of a line. I automatically pressed home and then a few delete keys, and \
it took me a while to understand what I did wrong.
My suggestion will keep the very useful "move to the beginning of the text in line" \
functionality - all that the user will have to do is press "double-home" instead of a \
single home.
And concerning backward compatibility - I don't think it's a very big issue. Since \
this is a user interface thing, users will quickly discover the change and adapt to \
it.
What do you think?
Thank you,
Noam Raphael
