I had the same in Gentoo.
The fix for me was: install a dictionary, as gentoo does not install one per default.
After I installed "apsell-de" (or aspell-en) it worked, you can then configure the \
spellchecking in the kcontrol center in "KDE Components"->"Spell Checker".

So it would even make sense to add a stenctence "Make sure you have a dictionary \
installed" or so... _______________________________________________
