Would it be possible to make this feature more flexible using some free
categories for user configuration.

An example: Visual Slick Edit offers to the user 5 or 6 categories named
Symbol 1, Symbol 2...

In this categories the user can specify the keywords that should be
highlighted. Also the colors, bold, italic and underline are configurable for
each one of this categories.

Also in the categories that already come configured with the application the
user can delete or add keywords.

All this can be done always inside the GUI.

I use Kate a lot because applications as VisualSlickEdit and JEdit have a lot
of features, which make them havey and sometimes less user friendly, that I
never use.

These are just some suggestions.
