In both cases it's a different application. In case of GNOME Shell even the complete User
Experience changes and a differnt window manager is used. This might be an acceptable
approach for "your hardware sucks", but is probably not for the case of turning compositing
off while playing a game. This is exactly what I mena with "Requires compositing at all time"

Usecases would be fullscreen HD-video and fullscreen OpenGL games.
