I wonder if something like "Visual Aids" or "Graphical Enhancements" is better, 
the effects are not just effects but add actual functionality. (The problem here 
is that nobody looking for "Desktop Effects" or "Compositing" will find them then, 
but I think for the user that doesn't care about the technicalities, what really 
matters is the improved functionality and the visual aids she gets.

Not really a solution, but maybe someone can make something out of this line of 
thinking.
