That's a very nasty behaviour, I agree. With enabled compositing I only have
the choice of getting a headache because of that brightness that hurts in the
eyes or of getting a headache because that blurry  background makes my eyes try
to focus it nonetheless (I'm shortsighted and blur effects like that are a real
pain for me).

It really would be a relief to have a simple effect like it was in KDE3 and is
in KDE4 without compositing - just a screen that turns grey without any blurs
and flashes.
