As you didn't mention explicitly:
Can you select a desktop with the arrow keys and activate it by pressing
"Enter" in such situations?

To me the cursor indeed becomes a cross -even if i click just the desktop- but
releasing it w/o moving activates the desktop.

However there is apparently no "deadzone" i.e. the movemode is triggered by
one(?!) pixel.
Do you use a touchpad?
