I think it would indeed make sense to query DPMSInfo() once a second or so 
while compositing, suspend compositing in case power_level != DPMSModeOn (or 
maybe wait for DPMSModeSuspend) and poll DPMSInfo @ 0.5Hz (avoiding useless 
CPU wakeups @ >= 60Hz)

This doesn't really fix #204211 (which might be a driver/X11 problem anyway) 
but bypasses this issue with a behavioural improvement.
