Summary: KWin Desktop Effects work -- sometimes
Product: kwin
Version: 4.2.4
Platform: Fedora RPMs
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: NOR
Component: general
AssignedTo: kwin@kde.org
ReportedBy: phrkonaleash@gmail.com
Version: (using KDE 4.2.4)
OS: Linux
Installed from: Fedora RPMs
From day one, my machine has worked splendidly with KWin4's desktop effects. I
installed Fedora11 KDE on my machine and the effects 'just worked.' I left it
like that until the shinies of compiz got the best of me...
After trying Compiz for a day or two and deciding that its usage of my CPU was
far less than satisfactory, I tried switching back to kwin after completely
uninstalling compiz from a tty with no X enabled. After logging in I tried
setting KWin up to use desktop effects, but it was no use, KWin would tell me
that it could not enable desktop effects with my current X configuration. Wha?
You just worked a week ago, and compiz (which technically requires more 3D
support) played just fine.
After spending a night or two fiddling with it, trying every possible
configuration in System Settings->Desktop->Desktop Effects->Advanced, kwin
magically decided (with no difference in the configuration options which I had
tried MULTIPLE times before!) to enable desktop effects and work nicely. Until
I logged out and logged back in, at which point, KWin was refusing to enable
desktop effects, again. It has done this on and off for the last few days. I
went so far as to rm ~/.kde/share/config/kwinrc, but that did not fix this
issue.
I -know- the system supports 3D, compositing and the necessary components to
enable Desktop Effects, the biggest issue I have is that KWin's error dialog
has no real information on why it is failing, and the failure itself.
