Hi, here it is:
1.Only shadows.
2.With or without shadows the effect is consistently the same. With or without
compositing enabled the effect is the same. Of course, compositing settings are
applied before starting the machine. 
Further changing compositing settings after putting VirtualBox in seamless mode
doesn't have an effect, only that there's no shadow to indicate a window.
3.I tried this in the following two way:
a)in Konsole:
export XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1
XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1 virtualbox
b)put "export XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1" in .bashrc and logout. Login and redo
the testing.
All the results are the same.

To make testing fast, don't kill VirtualBox, instead from its taskbar entry
select close and VirtualBox will offer to save the state, This is very fast.
