I had the same problem today - kwin started up as a black screen. My compositing section in kwinrc looked like this:
[Compositing]
Enabled=true

Merely changing 'true' to 'false' restored kwin as normal. Using the XRender backend works okay, though with some unrelated bugs. No black screen, though.

My card is an ATI radeon that doesn't support AIGLX - no direct rendering, no 3D acceleration at all.
