Kwin currently has Desktop Effects plugins for freehand drawing and stars showing \
position of the mouse cursor. There is application OmniDazzle for MacOSX that has \
pretty nice effects to extend these two.

 - dims everything except circle around cursor (similar to stars revolving cursor)

 - dims everything but user can draw rectangles and circles that "undims" areas and \
                thus emphasizes them

 - similar to cutout, but automatically emphasizes currently selected control

I might look into implementing some of these, but I have never written Kwin desktop \
