Summary: Kwin eats up all the system memory
Product: kwin
Version: unspecified
Platform: Ubuntu Packages
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: NOR
Component: general
AssignedTo: kwin kde org
ReportedBy: ubuntu martin-graesslin com
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.97.0)
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages
I noticed that kwin sometimes starts to eat up all my memory. More than 80% are shown \
in top and I have 2 GB RAM installed. It makes my system unusable as it starts to use \
the swap with continuing I/O. I have to kill the X-Server. This only happens when I \
enable compositing. Actually I am running a KDE3 desktop just with kwin of KDE4.
I have the following effects enabled:
boxswitch
desktopgrid
dialogparent
diminactive
fade
login
logout
maketransparent
minimizeanimation
presentwindows
shadow
I have an NVIDIA Graphics Card (driver 100.14.19) and I use the following settings:
- OpenGL mode: Texture from Bitmap
- Texture filter: Bilinear
- Direct rendering enabled
- Improved window management
- shadows
I have no logs of what is happening when kwin starts to eat up all the memory. At the \
moment I have enabled the effects, but memory consumption is OK, although it is \
increasing. I'll try to get some more information.
here the part from top:
PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND
11373 martin 15 0 492m 256m 244m S 1 12.9 0:11.18 kwin
RES and SHR are increasing all the time. In the output from kwin the following is \
repeating all the time - don't know if it has something to do with it: \
kwin(11373)/kdeui (KNotification) KNotification::slotReceivedIdError: Error while \
contacting notify deamon "The name org.kde.knotify was not provided by any .service \
files" kwin(11373)/kdeui (KNotification) KNotification::~KNotification: 0
If there is any way to gather more information, please tell me.
