imho it's a bad idea to prevent old GPU cards from (basic) FX (also cards with 
only 2 PSPipes are probably insufficient for a usefull shader use on a 
compmgr) 
i guess shaders are avoidable for most effects on a composite manager (most 
things can probably done by texture blending and T&L, well more T than L ;), 
i'd find them rather interesting to paint UI elements

because it's supported by GPU vendors, they support it because of SGI and 
commercal use on *nix/X environtments and it's probably quite easy to port 
from the winblows version.
