I'm not sure, but if KDesktop (upcoming plasma, yuhu..) does (could) send the 
X Pixmap id with the ipc, you could oerate on the pixmap data instead of 
recreating the image from the PNG, what's of course much faster (but not if 
you use openGL, i think, as textures needs to be created from images anyway)
