The spike lasts anywhere from about 4 seconds to about 15, give or take.  Normally I \
set my wallpapers to cycle every minute, meaning the machine was effectively useless \
as much as 25% of the time until I disabled timed wallpaper changes.  Even 4 seconds \
is pushing it, though I could buy that for, say, the changing of fonts.  This is an \
nVidia-based desktop, with the appropriate nVidia driver, dri enabled, etc, etc.  P4, \
1.7Ghz, 512Mb RAM, typically more than enough free not to be hitting swap issues and \
