Yeah, I'm writing an application for timing labor contractions and I ran into
this as well.  Note that there may be two separate issues:  (1)
System.currentTimeMillis() is incorrect if the Palm is powered off and back on
without restarting the KVM.  I suspect that a time variable in the KVM is
initialized only on startup.  (2) There is not yet a way for the KVM to use the
Palm's alarm mechanism.  (No app gets to run indefinitely; if you need to wake
up at some time in the future, or at regular intervals, you must set an alarm
and let the Palm OS wake you up...)

I've just entered a bug report for (1) above.  Note that a workaround is to use
the third-party utility AutoOff to disable automatic power off.  I'm giving
some thought to how to best handle (2), and will submit a feature request.  By
all means, if any of you have thoughts on what approach to propose, let's hear
it!  {smile}
