I don't think that this is true. KatePart assumes right now, as far as I know, 
that every line uses the same font (which leads to a bug as you have the 
possibility to set different font sizes uses SmartRanges now). But if you use 
different font sizes, you'll end up with different start and end columns for 
each line.
