I thought it might be best to get into this after Open GL rendering
gets implemented, if it does. 

Even otherwise, it would probably be a good idea to add this as a
project idea -- but I feel that it might be a little too simple for a
GSoC. Can we have a few more associated extensions of this project
that can be used to make it worth three months of work? Even other
features useful for a professional might be packagable along with this
in a nice GSoC project idea :-)
