hello brian,
you'll need 2.1 GB additional space.
just copy/paste this to your command line.
cd $HOME/.kde4/share/apps/kstars/
download the file. wget should do a better job than a browser:
wget http://download.kde.org/apps/kstars/USNO-NOMAD-1e8-1.0.tar.gz
if you don't have wget try curl:
curl -o USNO-NOMAD-1e8-1.0.tar.gz http://download.kde.org/apps/kstars/USNO-NOMAD-1e8-1.0.tar.gz
decompress the file:
tar xvzf USNO-NOMAD-1e8-1.0.tar.gz
this should end up in a file called USNO-NOMAD-1e8.dat in the kstars directory.
go to kstars preferences and set "star-catalogs->star-density" to a
level you prefer.
that's all. :-)
