Take a look at libkpimexchange in kde-pim, which reads appointments from
the
Exchange server including all read/unread, last modified, etc.
information using
the WebDAV protocol (only Exchange 2000).

It should be easily adaptable to email. There are docs on the Microsoft
website, you
can download a Windows help file from
http://msdn.microsoft.com/downloads/?url=/downloads/topic.asp?URL=/MSDN-
FILES/028/001/178/topic.xml
or look in http://msdn.microsoft.com under
Enterprise Development/Development/.NET Enterprise Servers/MS Exchange
Server/
MS Exhcange 2000 Server/SDK Documentation/Microsoft Exchange
SDK/Reference/
Exchange Store/Exchange Store Schema

Cheers
