Kopete is unmaintained. Sorry bu I do not know how to debug the xmpp protocol.

You can try telepathy, which is going to replace Kopete in the future: http://dot.kde.org/2011/12/07/kde-telepathy-02-future-free-communication. Maybe it works for you.
