In order to use the irc gateway just join the the channel
kopete%irc.kde.org@irc.kdetalk.net
and you will join the channel #kopete on freenode.

Or type
kopete xmpp:kopete%25irc.kde.org@irc.kdetalk.net?join


But you need my last svn patch otherwise you will be flooded by version 
message.
