You cannot determine your external IP automatically, there's no way in TCP/IP to do \
that and the Jabber protocol does not offer a server query for it either. Kopete \
automatically tries to determine your IP address, but if you are located in a LAN, it \
will only be able to determine your local IP, which is useless for file transfers.

To fix this, Kopete offers you to specify your external IP. The easiest way is to \
setup a DynDNS host. You will then have to forward the file transfer port to your \
