just a sidenote, it's caused by the KSqueezedTextLabel inside the statusbar.
changing
statusBar()->addWidget( m_status_text, 1 );
to
statusBar()->addWidget( m_status_text, 0 );
fixes it but of course also removes the stretch. I assume it's a bug in 
KSqueezedTextLabel because it does not happen with KDE 3.2.
