When clicking an online Yahoo contact the error message:
"This user is not reachable at the moment. Please try a protocol that supports \
offline sending, or wait until this user comes online"

If the Yahoo contact initiates the conversation I am able to reply.
I have not tried with other protocols, since I do not use other protocols and have no \
