It has (unfortunately, because that would be trivial to fix) nothing to do 
with default settings.

The problem is called "encoding". The XSLT engine (correctly) expects UTF-8 
text, but gets something else. Notably ICQ is troublesome because many 
clients don't specify the encoding, leaving Kopete in the cold to guess and 
convert to UTF-8.
