Having this problem as well, I have managed to do a VT switch and run top during one \
of these incidents, X was using about 40% of my CPU and taking up approximately 1.5GB \
of memory (512MB of physical RAM, the rest swap).

This would suggest to me that it's something in the rendering of the window.

For the case of possible dodgy X drivers, I'm running the latest nVidia drivers.
