we've talked about this extensively on this list with Martijn. since nobody 
else participated in the discussion, i just assumed everybody else silently

so now that i hear from you, let's start over. why does it break kopete's 
design ?

keep in mind the reason for passing the protocol as an argument: the 
messageSent signal in KMM is just not well designed (the reasons for this 
have been mentioned on the list, more than once).
