I went on a learning experience yesterday. "Monospace" is a virtual
font, it isn't an actual single font. The apl characters come from a
font called "Cumberland AMT". This is not the first font in the list.
In fact it is preceded by another font called "Fixed" which I think
is also a virtual font. So it looks as if the problem may be with
obtaining characters that are not in the first font in a virtual font.
