I think it had something to do with KRootPixmap::slotBackgroundChanged(int 
desk) not working in some circumstances, which probably means that 
KRootPixmap never got a paint event or something.

Why does reacting to the show event break anything?

The patch to konsole looks very strange, doesn't that break things when you 
start konsole manually and then switch desktops?
