Subject: [Konsole-devel] Bug#34074: konsole maps Backspace to Rubout instead of Control-H, lost configurabili

Package: konsole
Version: 1.0.2 (using KDE 2.2.1 )
Severity: normal
Installed from: SuSE
Compiler: gcc version 2.95.3 20010315 (SuSE)
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.4.9
OS/Compiler notes:
In konsole w/KDE 1.x, there was an option to send
control-h for Backspace instead of Rubout. In
2.2 this feature seems to have disappeared or
moved.
I tried remapping keysym Backspace to 0x8 via
xmodmap, but that messed up most of the
other gui files.
As it stands, (w/o the above remapping), backspace
works as a "space back and delete previous
character (Backspace)", in all of the Gui
apps. Works in gvim, netscape, as well
as all of the KDE apps I use. Just not in
konsole.
So in vim, I press Backspace and I get a
rubout character sent (^?). But in gvim, I
press Backspace and it works. Since the
problem seems to be specific to konsole (maybe
other terms as well -- not sure), I'm reporting
it as a bug here -- especially since the
remapping feature used to be present in
KDE konsole 1.x.
I have tried the 4 different keyboard mappings
and they made no difference. I looked in the
console documentation and couldn't find anything.
There may be a simple way to do this, but then I
would assert that removing the mapping feature
from 1.1 and not documenting the new way to
do it is a bug at least in the documentation. From
the manpage of xmodmap:
One of the more simple, yet convenient, uses of xmodmap is
to set the keyboard's "rubout" key to generate an alter-
nate keysym. This frequently involves exchanging
Backspace with Delete to be more comfortable to the user.
If the ttyModes resource in xterm is set as well, all ter-
minal emulator windows will use the same key for erasing
....
--------
It is recognized that this issue is a widely spread
problem such that it bears mentioning in
the manpage.
If there is a simple workaround, perhaps just documenting it on the konsole help \
page would be sufficient -- otherwise, the explicit menu option to remap the key was \
very str8 forward and user-friendly.
Thanks,
Linda
