What does this mean then:

(from ./configure --help for Qt)

 *  -qt-libpng ......... Use the libpng bundled with Qt.
    -system-libpng ..... Use a libpng from the operating system.
                      
I'm using qt 2.3.2.

When you use this default, it still only creates a libqte.so

IIRC Qt/E does not include PNG support, it uses the system available
libraries (similarly for MNG and JPEG). My libqte.so.2.3.1 certainly has
references to libpng.so and libjpeg.so
