Sorry for the harsh title, but this bug gets really annoying if you need to
correct the address quite often.

Another negative side effect of variant 1 is cookie management. "localhost" is
a whole different domain than "localhost.localdomain", both in allowed/denied
domains as well as sharing cookies. This is expected behaviour, but I need to
take care accessing and not just typing the correct hostname.
