--- Comment #5 from Gérard Talbot <browserbugs gtalbot org> 2010-03-30 05:25:09 ---
The first version of Netscape 7 actually allowed users to divert new unnamed
windows created with target="_blank" into the same window.

HTML 4.01, Section 16.3.2 Target semantics
"
User agents may provide users with a mechanism to override the target
attribute.
"
http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/present/frames.html#h-16.3.2

Techniques for User Agent Accessibility Guidelines 1.0
"
For HTML [HTML4], allow the user to control the process of opening a document
in a new target frame or a viewport created by a script. For example, for
target="_blank", open the window according to the user's preference.
"
http://www.w3.org/TR/UAAG10-TECHS/guidelines.html#tech-limit-viewports

H83 (HTML technique): Using the target attribute to open a new window on user
request and indicating this in link text

"
User agents can inform the user, and can also be configured not to open the new
window.
"
