If in a .htaccess-file "AuthName" contains an exclamation point, e.g.:

AuthUserFile /srv/www/.htpasswd
AuthGroupFile /srv/www/.htgroup
AuthName "Yo! Heads up"
AuthType Basic
require group users

Konqueror does not show a login-dialog, bus shows an error-page:

The requested operation could not be completed
Request Aborted By User

If the exclamation mark is removed, a login-dialog is showed, and after filling
in the proper credentials the secured website is shown.

Konqueror 3.5.10 (Using KDE 3.5.10 "release 55" openSUSE) has no problem with
the exclamation point.
