The way you set the background color/image for file browsing mode in Konqueror is unintuitive, and hard to find. At the moment (as of Konqueror 3.5.2) you set this using [View]->[Configure Background...]. My experience is that this can't be set anywhere else.

I think setting the background color/image should be at [Settings]->[Configure Konqueror...]->[Appearance] (and the corresponding place in the Control Center) instead, as the other related settings reside there.
