You most probably don't know what the virtual screen size is. When real screen size is different from the virtual one, the "peephole" is handled by the X server transparently to the applications - they only know one size, and that's the virtual size. They don't care about the real monitor resolution, just like they simply use all memory, and don't care whether it's physical memory or just swap space.
