Open/Close tabs are 2 of the most used functions, and thus need to be easily \
accessible. Compared to the little "X" square, the tab itself is a much bigger target \
and thus is much easier to be clicked on. Just imagine how much harder it would be to \
switch tabs if you have to click on a little square.

Since "middle mouse button=open in new tab", it is not unreasonable to have "middle \
mouse button=close tab". The "Unix paradigma" argument is not too convincing, as \
"middle mouse button=paste" does not work in either kicker taskbar or konsole tabs. \
"middle mouse button=paste" in a text entry widget is a consistent behavior, "middle \
mouse button=paste" in non text entry widget is not.

And as Dominik mentioned, Mozilla/Firefox do have the option to toggle this behavior, \
and Opera has it by default.

In my opinion, "middle click on tab load url" is not really useful, as you can always \
switch to the targetted tab and paste on either the location bar or any empty area of \
the page. On the other hand, "middle click close tab" will increase the usability as \
it makes closing tab, a much more frequent task than pasting url, much more easier. \
