Since desktop icons are probably more likely to be organized vertically than horizontally, this almost always messes up any organizational pattern the user may have chosen for their icons. I suggest that the "grid" upon which icons are organized be static--for example, room for an icon with two lines of text. All files with longer filenames are truncated in some fashion to fit this grid.
