Curious, because after adding head and title to the smaller testcase it indeed does \
validate as valid XHTML 1.0 Strict.

http://www.w3.org/International/questions/qa-validator-charset-check.html claims that \
the validator does check also the validity of UTF-8:

"For UTF-8 input, the validator checks to make sure that only valid UTF-8 byte \
sequences are used."

I didn't check the UTF-8 definition though.
