Here I am again.
Thanks to the huge interest in the problem and the immense amount of feedback
that reached me from fellow-sufferers all over the world, I have been able to
track down the problem to the HIGHMEM-Memory Management of the Linux kernel.

It seems that having 1 GB of RAM constitutes a critical threshold, but nobody
seems to be able to explain to me why. Adding "mem=768M" on the kernel command
line eliminates __all problems__, but is unsatisfactory in a way, too.

I do not know what happens if I put more RAM in the machine, but I assume it
will work, too, then.

I am well inclined to put the blame e.g. on the NVIDIA driver, but perchance
anybody knows more about it?

At least it seems not to be a KDE bug, so why not close it?
