Summary: "Open with ..." and "Preview in ..." should not be
separated, see .jar files
Product: konqueror
Version: unspecified
Platform: SuSE RPMs
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: NOR
Component: general
AssignedTo: konq-bugs@kde.org
ReportedBy: info@j-pfennig.de
Version: 3.1.2 (using KDE 3.1.2)
Installed from: SuSE
Compiler: gcc version 3.3 20030226 (prerelease) (SuSE Linux)
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.4.20
Just think about being a normal user and being confronted with a java application. \
Such a user might get tempted to click on the jar file from inside a konqueror \
window. What happens now is very unexpected and clearly shows a design problem (and \
therefore it is a bug, not a wish list item)...
(1) User gets confused that the content of the jar file gets displayed as an archive \
- the expected action would have been to execute the jar file.
(2) Our brave user realises 'Oh! I just have to set "Open with ..." to call "java \
-jar" in 1st place' - But surprise: the menu entry already is there, but on second \
place. Why? ARE ALL KDE USERS HACKERS THAT ARE EVERY DAY DISASSEMBLING JAVA CODE?
(3) The brave user will also learn to close and to reopen the konqueror window \
(another bug report) before the new settings become effective...
(4) But still the jar content get shown as an archive. The "Preview in ..." takes \
precedence about "Open with ..." and our brave user will disable it (after some \
searching inside the dialogs).
(5) Now it works - a click starts the jar file (which should have been the default \
from the very beginning)! But ...
(6) The user became curious - maybe somtimes his role is the one of a hacker - but \
surprise! Now we have completely lost the preview functionality (the menu entry is \
gone).
------------------ SUGGESTION ------------------
Add the "Preview in ..." as a pseudo action in the "Open with dialog ...". So it \
should be possible to retain the "Preview in ..." menu entry without being the \
default action for a right-mouse-click.
Yours J. Pfennig
