Subject: nspluginscan does not load any plugin on FreeBSD
From: vkde@rtcomm.ru

Package: konqueror
Version: KDE 2.2.0 CVS/CVSup/Snapshot
Severity: normal
Installed from: Compiled sources
Compiler: gcc 2.95.3
OS: FreeBSD
OS/Compiler notes: FreeBSD 4.3 - stable with native C/C++ compiler

Greetings,

A problem arises when trying run plugins on FreeBSD. Looks like there is no way to \
use any plugin by Konq on FreeBSD.

I tried Netscape's flash plugin, either Linux
and FreeBSD versions.

The Linux plugins need some special environment to run, so when I try run \
nspluginscan it complains for unresolved symbol "stderr" and refuses to add the \
plugin.

When I try to add FreeBSD's plugin, nspluginscan says the file has 'invalid file \
format' (see below).

Probably KLibLoader merely does not recognize FreeBSD's shared library files.

There seems to be 2 ways to solve this issue:
handle Linux shared libraries on FreeBSD or
handle FreeBSD libraries.

Used versions:

KDE: CVSup'ed as of July 17, 2001
QT 2.3.1
XFree86 4.0.1
FreeBSD: 4.3-stable, all updates
libflashplugin and linux-flashplugin
from FreeBSD ports

nspluginscan output:

nspluginscan: Checking library /usr/local/netscape/plugins/libswf.so
nspluginscan: - opening/usr/local/netscape/plugins/libswf.so
kdecore (KLibLoader): WARNING: library=/usr/local/netscape/plugins/libswf.so: \
file=/usr/local/netscape/plugins/libswf.so: /usr/local/netscape/plugins/libswf.so: \
                invalid file format
nspluginscan: - open failed, skipping

nspluginscan: Checking library /usr/local/netscape/plugins/libflashplayer.so
nspluginscan: - opening/usr/local/netscape/plugins/libflashplayer.so
kdecore (KLibLoader): WARNING: library=/usr/local/netscape/plugins/libflashplayer.so: \
file=/usr/local/netscape/plugins/libflashplayer.so: \
                /usr/local/netscape/plugins/libflashplayer.so: Undefined symbol \
                "stderr"
nspluginscan: - open failed, skipping

Same problem was when I used earlier versions
of KDE.

Result is: Konq cannot run plugins on FreeBSD

This bug was mentioned at www.freebsd.org; however there were no solutions.
